Food instability and hygiene poverty effect approximately 34% of Baltimoreans.

This means that about 1 in 3 people living in Baltimore may find themselves in need of food or hygiene supplies and are unable to access food resources in their neighborhoods.

What is food instability?
Food instability happens when adequate supplies of food are not accessible and/or affordable. This is particularly common in Baltimore’s food deserts.

What is hygiene poverty?
Hygiene poverty happens when people cannot readily afford to purchase hygiene supplies like soap, toothpaste and feminine hygiene products as needed for themselves or their families.

How does affect Baltimore’s gap families?
As usual, Baltimore’s gap families are caught between a rock and a hard place. When they experience food instabilities due to emergencies they often can’t qualify for Food Stamps (SNAP benefits) nor can they often access local food pantries and other social service programming as the pantries generally operate during their working hours or place geographical and/or income restrictions that make gap families ineligible. When Baltimore’s families face hygiene poverty, there are even less available resources.

How do we fix this?

Our Solutions:

  • Creating more accessible options for getting food and hygiene items during difficult / emergency situations.

  • Ensuring that food and hygiene items are affordable to those in need

  • Removing barriers to access like:

    • long eligibility processes

    • zip code restrictions

    • income restrictions

    • the stigma of “receiving a handout“

We’ve teamed up with the Station North Tool Library to build the pantries and Simply the Basics to help with providing basic hygiene necessities and additionally, are working with various food pantries and community organizations to ensure that the pantries are placed in neighborhoods where they will meet the needs of the community.
